With the help of the Catlin Seaview Survey, an organization documenting the world’s declining coral reefs via high-resolution, underwater photography Google has made a huge contribution to our online canon and made ocean viewing truly accessible. The 360-degree, panoramic photographs allow scientists to monitor the health of coral reefs around the world and offer policy makers and the general public a closer look at a critical part of the environment.
To go scuba diving on a shore excursion is an exciting and fun event. Tour operators provide all equipment and usually pick you up next to your cruise ship – thanks to the same water also under your dive boat. And you can sample many dive sites over one cruise and decide where you might want to return to. When you book your shore excursions online, you can also take advantage of the web to prepare your dive. And who else than Google provides you with a tool for that.
Since 2012, Google has been working on the underwater Street View project. The divers typically cover about 1.5 miles (2 kilometers) and take between 3,000 and 4,000 images per dive during their expeditions. Mapping ShoreFox’s shore excursions with the Google project, you can get a glance of what you’re expecting before you even get close to the dive site:
- Bermuda, Hamilton: North East Breaker, Hourglass Reef, Mary Celeste Wreck, Emily’s Pinnacle, South West Breaker
- Mexico, Cozumel: Santa Rosa Wall, Columbia Deep
- Hawaii, Lahaina: Molokini Crater
- Hawaii, Honolulu: Hanauma Bay
You always get the Street View like look and feel by clicking on “View on Google Maps” in the lower left corner. Than you can navigate your future dive with your mouse and look around.
If you want to access more dives than you can reach by cruise ship, have a look at the current status of the full project here.
