The song “Kokomo” of the Beach Boys was part of the soundtrack for the movie “Cocktail”. Starring Tom Cruise as Brian Flanagan, the movie follows him as a bartender starting his career in New York and moving on to the Caribbean. The song managed to become the band’s largest selling single of all time. The location for the tropical island scenes in the film were shot in Jamaica. This was the peg, on which to hang the storyline of the song.

Flanagan’s success took him to Jamaica, where the beach bar scenes were staged at Dragon Bay Beach, Port Antonio, Jamaica. The next port of call for cruise ships from there is Ocho Rios, 60 miles (100 kilometers) west of Port Antonio. Whereas “Kokomo” in the song is an invented, pure imaginative location, all other places are real, and you can visit them all via cruise ship. You will most likely need to take more than one cruise as the Bermudas and Aruba, Jamaica, and Bahamas are not usually on one single itinerary: So, you don’t need to be a bartender or “Beach Boy” to indulge the sweet life on sandy beaches.

And when you might make it to Port Antonio without a cruise, look out for the “Cruise Bar”. The movie won two Golden Raspberry Awards for Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay but you still can enjoy a cocktail there – the jury didn’t rate the drinks.
